Researchers test ‘biohybrid robots’ that merge living tissue with machines
Researchers from the University of Tokyo have fused together living tissue from a rat with mechanical components to create a biohybrid system that can mimic human fingers.
In the video shared by National Geographic, the finger-like system can be seen performing precise tasks that require dexterity and are traditionally more difficult for robots to accomplish. Scientists that participated in the study say that these small movements will lay the foundation for more complex human-robots.
“If we can combine more of these muscles into a single device, we should be able to reproduce the complex muscular interplay that allows hands, arms, and other parts of the body to function,” said Yuya Morimoto, lead author of the research project.
The research team looked into biohybrid systems because living tissue combined with man-made machines can achieve better movement and flexibility when compared to traditional robots made from plastic and metal. The increase of movement and flexibility will allow robots to better perform precision tasks.
The research team grew their robot’s muscles by layering rat tissue on top of a robotic frame. The living cells used in these types of robots usually come from the heart or skeletal muscle of rats or chickens that are bonded to a material that is non-toxic to the cells. To ensure that the cells function properly when stimulated, researchers use micropatterning techniques to align the cells in an order that’s conducive to movement.
However, due to the short lifespan of the living tissue when intermixed with the robotic system – after a period of time, the muscles would shrink making them useless – co-author of the project, Shoji Takeuchi, layered the muscles next to each other to create an antagonistic pair. An antagonistic pair is when one muscle contracts while the other one expands, similar to the relationship between human biceps and triceps. Takeuchi said that antagonistic pairing prevents wear, allowing the muscles to be used for a longer period of time. In the most recent tests, the tissue used in the video lasted just over a week. This muscle pattern also gives the robot a full 90-degree motion.
The research team believes that biohybrid systems could help create adept prosthetics and provide human-like muscles that scientists can test drugs and toxins on, thus reducing the need for animal testing.
There are some limitations to biohybrid robots, however. Biohybrid robots used in the research can only survive and function in water. Electrically stimulating the muscles in water will form bubbles that will eventually degrade the tissue. The research team is looking into genetically modifying the muscle cells to become more resistant to damage and can induce neurons, called motor neurons, that tell the muscle when to move.
Elon Musk has been pretty open about the idea of FSD being the difference maker for Tesla’s future.
If Tesla succeeds in achieving FSD, it could become the world’s most valuable company. If it doesn’t, then the company would not be able to reach its optimum potential.

There are few things that prove an enthusiast’s love towards a company more than a dedicated short film. This was highlighted recently when YouTube’s SoKrispyMedia posted a 10-minute action movie starring Optimus, Tesla’s humanoid robot, as well as several of the company’s most iconic products.
The video:
- Shot like a Hollywood action flick, the video featured a rather humorous plot involving a group of thieves that mistakenly targeted a Tesla Model 3 driver.
- The Model 3 driver then ended up speaking to Tesla for assistance, and some high-octane and high-speed hijinks ensued.
- While the short film featured several Tesla products like the Model 3, Superchargers, and the Cybertruck, it is Optimus that truly stole the show.
- Optimus served several roles in the short film, from an assistant in a Tesla office to a “robocop” enforcer that helped out the Model 3 driver.

Cool inside jokes:
- The best Tesla videos are those that show an in-depth knowledge of the company, and SoKrispyMedia definitely had it.
- From the opening scenes alone, the video immediately poked fun at TSLA traders, the large number of gray Tesla owners, and the fact that many still do not understand Superchargers.
- The video even poked fun at Tesla’s software updates, as well as how some Tesla drivers use Autopilot or other features without reading the fine print in the company’s release notes.
- The video ended with a tour de force of references to Elon Musk products, from the Tesla Cybertruck to the Boring Company Not-a-Flamethrower, which was released back in 2018.

Tesla definitely seems to be determined to release the coolest lineup of accessories for its coolest vehicle. As could be seen in an update to the Tesla Shop, the electric vehicle maker has now launched a metal key card for the Cybertruck—because why not?
Cybertruck keys:

- In comparison, the Cybertruck’s regular key card is sold for $40.

- Being the company’s most eye-catching vehicle, it is no surprise that that Tesla has been releasing quite a lot of merchandise inspired by the all-electric pickup truck.
- These include a $250 levitating Cybertruck model, as well as a $35 Cybertruck wind-up racer, both of which are out of stock.
- Tesla also sells the $35 “CyberMug,” a $40 “CyberStein,” and a $50 “CyberVessel.”
